Birth of a Website!

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Hello everyone! I'm so happy to announce that my new website is up and running.

*cuts the ribbon*

So happy to finally have a website of my own (that is not under free hosting)! It took me days to decide on which web host, and days for me to decide on my domain name (I really did want http://vina-k.co or http://vina-k.jp but they were for Colombia and Japan so…). But in the end I resorted to my full name up there.

I’m aware that I have two blogs to maintain now, the old one being my very personal blog back from high school. This one is more tailored to my design process, projects, inspiration, so on and so forth. Of course I plan to have my portfolio up online as well, but perhaps not now, since I’m not looking for freelance jobs just yet.

Also, I shamefully confess that I did not design this web layout. However, I promise to design it when I get the hang of web design (hopefully soon). Right now, I’m still a lost lamb so give it some time : D

Do give it a visit often, at www.vinakosasih.com
Simple! And for design students with portfolio/design blog websites (strictly NOT personal blog), e-mail me at me@vinakosasih.com for a link exchange. Let's network :)

Who are You?

Saturday, March 19, 2011

I have a lecturer. He told me something inspiring the other day as I spoke to him.

He was praising my work, and told me enthusiastically which direction I should take it forward to. I listened to him, and suddenly noticed that his suggestions did not follow the guidelines of the project. I asked him if that would be a problem. He looked at me (with truly the clearest eyes I've ever seen in my life!) and said, "Sometimes when you have something wonderful in your hands, and you know it, you have to give it the glory it deserves. Not change it into something that is what everybody else is doing."

I was really inspired by his words. This is so far from what I've often been told. Follow the guidelines, the rules. He told me that what I was doing was "wonderful", and for a young student, that word really meant a lot to me, regardless of the possibility that he might have thrown the word in casually as foreigners often do.

I know how it feels to have something in you that you love, only to be told by many that it is ugly, told to change to what they think is better. I know these things cannot be avoided in life. There are too many people in the world and too many different opinions. I asked my brother what he would do if he created something he loved and people told him it wasn't good. His answer was, "If you are going to listen to everyone of them, then you will be like everyone. You need to believe in what you feel is right, because then that will be your personal style. And people will see it."

To be honest I admit I have been taking what people say about me to heart. It has hurt me, confused me and my identity. I will use this post to define some things which say a lot about me, because for me writing/typing always helps put things straight.

1.

Clever design. Something with a good concept is always appreciated.
Concepts can be simple or complex. They surprise and please us.

2.

Simple design. Some people say you shouldn't design something that has no function.
I believe most things have function, and I believe beauty in itself is a function.

 3.

Beauty. Be it nature, or people, or music, art, a soul. I have a strong desire to seek beauty. Maybe because I'm a Libra ;) (yep, being stereotypical here!) I love surrounding myself with beauty.
And these usually don't come with a very high price (well not too much).

4.

Jazz, soul, and classical music. They leave a mark in me, and who I am.
If only music in this era could be like how it was back in the past.
Back then music wasn't all about lifestyle and how 'hip' you are.
Allow me to be harsh: mainstream music these days are trash.
Please someone save it.

5.

Nudity. First of all, I love the human body. I love this wonderful art God has created, that is so timeless.
Of course we have all hated our bodies at a point in life. But don't abuse your body. Treat it well, nurture it, and respect it. Second of all, nudity means nothing between your bare skin and the environment. It's a thrill to experience this nature of varied textures and temperatures.

6.

Have you ever experienced the sunrise while barefoot on the beach?
I did once, and it made me feel so alive, and so happy.

 7.

Romance. Because I'm a Libra :p
Truth be told I'm a sucker for romance since I was a kid. So good luck Ken! lol

What are some of the things that strongly define who you are? Have you thought about that before?

Well, I have to get back to my (piling) homework so I'll keep you guys posted next time :)
Thanks for reading!

the only warm subject in this blue room is me

Hello you all!

Above is my most recent project, a print-based music promotion piece for "Departure in F Minor" by Calexico. I am quite happy with the results, as I was happy with my Chic Handicraft Expo last semester. To be frank, I think all my projects this semester are shit stuff and this is the only one which I finish and can say I'm satisfied.

For me, satisfaction from a project doesn't come down to whether it looks (and functions) great or not. Well, not completely. I had a poster project last semester where my solution looked utterly crap, and yet I was satisfied with it. Simply because I knew how much effort I put into it and I know I have developed a lot working on that project. I really think in university you have to push yourself the hardest, especially because
  • Look at the grand amount of resources you have available. All those design books in the library your money definitely can't buy - hoard it while you're a student. I borrowed 13 more thick design books just yesterday and I'm very a happy nerd.
  • The briefs you get are so flexible, and mostly hypothetical. With such a great opportunity at hand, push your creativity each time, and don't worry if your solution costs a bit more because it took special paper or printing. Most likely your uni project wouldn't be mass-produced anyway thus you only have one piece and best let that one shine.
  • As a student, try as many different styles as possible and find one that you are comfortable with. Personally, I was very much at a loss when I first started and haven't found my style. Only recently has it been coming together bit by bit. Be experimental and look up other design styles and try those you fancy. Then you would pick it up and develop your own. Just like the first time you picked up that pencil to start drawing so many years ago.
  • Remember that in uni, it always works out. The worst you can get to is getting a fail (though I do not recommend ever getting that...). You never lose a project or client. My motto is always "in everything you do, learn".
  • I feel that being a design student, the grades are not all that important. If you're doing badly now, as long as you keep working hard it's going to be great. They say you can't learn how to be a designer, but I think you can. What you can't do, is learn how to be an artist, but that is on a completely different subject matter altogether.

So my fellow budding designers, best of luck to you all!

Note: I am not at all a good designer. Yet.

green everywhere

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Just a random post. So I was cleaning up my room just now and deciding whether to throw this piece of flyer from Lancome:

I decided to throw it, so I tore it up in four pieces and attached the mouth and eyes to different owners.

Random... I think the woman on the left looks prettier like that, but the one on the right is... well, not as attractive.

And I finished printing and trimming my stationery sets today!

That's the back of the letterhead, front of letterhead, back of business card, front of complimentary slip, and the envelope. This is the first set. I don't particularly like the second set so I'm not posting it. This is still in development stage, so everything's still quite...yeah. Will be further refined for the final submission which is after the holiday! Oh and that's all for 'Earthsmart Printing' company identity.

Nothing much happened today, except the first class was utterly useless and a waste of time, and the lecture, which was by far the most interesting one this semester, was terminated halfway because of the fire drill... and I forgot to buy silver paint for Serah's necklace :(

New Blog Layout~

Friday, August 6, 2010

the old

Yes it's that time of the year (?) again, time for a change! My skin was starting to itch seeing the low resolution Mac photobooth photo on the layout header. I've always used codes from existing layouts and to be honest I haven't change the codes for the past few designs, only slightly. Since I am a design student, and I learned a bit of Dreamweaver last year, I thought hey, it's time to make my own layout.

I have forgotten so much, but I somehow made everything work in Dreamweaver anyway. Web design is lots of fun! It's very exciting for the nerd in me.

In these photos I wore two layers, that's the silk kimono slip inside, and my yukata outside. I wish I had a proper kimono but I don't :<>

Thank you so much Listy for helping me take the photographs :D

Some candid shots:

fixing the hair

fixing the yukata

weird half-opened eyes candid with a fat neck

candid which looks like an ad for Nikon camera

So yes those are the photos. In total there were 459 photos, which I cut down to 99. And it just so happened that the shot I used for the header was the 459th photo!

And you may have noticed that I designed a logo for this blog. It was quite a last-minute decision really, and I just wanted to scratch something up in a few minutes so I did! I just played around with the words JUICE22 and came up with that final solution. I thought the overlapping 2's created a bit of the organic feel that is evident in the idea of 'juice'. So yeah, for something designed in around 15 minutes, I say it's not too shabby.

The previous layout title was (rose) and this time it's collection of memories, which is the English translation of those Japanese words you see. Why did I use Japanese even though I am 1.not Japanese 2.don't speak much of the language? Because I love the typography. Nuff said. And anyway it suits the blog theme.

So yeah I guess that's about it! It's a bit simple and slightly more texture here and there would look better, but I shall let it be for now. Is the font for the blog post text too big though? Hmm...

the thing about advertising...

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Hai readers.

How have you been?

Yes I do recall that once, a long time ago, I mentioned that I shall blog much more frequently when uni starts and yes I have been quite active (mentally) for the past few days. With a beautiful long to-do list on my wall, books and course readings that's been feeding my poor little brain, I am at a loss at what to blog about since the fact is: there is nothing to share with you all. gasp.

Well of course not honeys, I always have something at the corner somewhere that I could just rant on. :) Let's talk about... how I have just started my advertising elective this semester and for that purpose, as I was still motivated and fresh (we all know how that feels, that is before reality crushes our initial optimism), I borrowed a book about advertising from the library and this I did purely on my own will (I have become a diligent student it seems). Yeah, whoa.

So I thought this book would help me with my projects and what not, but as I started reading the first chapter of this book, I realised I was on the other side of the fence. The author was practically bashing the practise of advertising, labelling it as a manipulative force that portrays sexism where images of women were used, and promotes objects with highly desirable traits and emotions which thus dehumanises our society with a cynical outlook on human beings, and a love or dependency on products. That's... my summary of it. The first chapter at least.

Yeah I know it sounds like a lot of bull for those who do not believe in the powers of advertising. You're thinking, hey girl I see a whole bunch of ads every single day doesn't make me want to buy the things they're promoting. But really, the most successful ads are those that persuade you silently. It's like you're not even conscious that they are changing the way you feel and think. A piece of flyer that says 'THIS IS THE BEST SOAP YOU CAN GET AND IT'S CHEAP, ONLY $1! GET IT NOW!' in shocking red and yellow and bold texts will probably work, in a sense that it targets those who wants cheap soap. But it won't really help in building the brand of that soap (or attract lots of consumers for that matter). And if you want a long-lasting successful business, the brand image is crucial, right? Those kinds of ads won't help you.

That's why ads are so clever and engaging. Many humorous ads also make you laugh along, without you realising that it is influencing you greatly. Have you ever bought a product just because you liked its ad? I have, many times. Call me guilty but seeing those ads already gave me enough emotional attachment to buy the product even though I might not really like it. For instance, I'm not a big fan of how Flora perfume by Gucci smells, but I am so so so tempted to get myself a bottle because I think the magazine ads were just stunning and the TV commercial was mind-blowing. And the bottle looks classy and I love it! I love everything about it! Except... the scent itself. Design is important isn't it?

And I quote this from the book I borrowed:

'Some of the most talented and creative people in the world are dedicated to this work. Indeed, the most skilful propagandists of our time are not working for dictators, they are certainly not working exclusively for the Democratic party or the Republicans either. They are working for Foote, Cone & Belding, Ogilvy & Mather, and DDB Needham Worldwide.'

Should I put in a reference? Sure...

Kilbourne, J 1999, 'Can't Buy My Love', Introduction p. 27 yeah I know the format is wrong and I didn't even have an in-text reference but whatever...! I am not writing an essay! I have done that yesterday :p :D

Bye guys till my next blog and hopefully this didn't bore you since it really isn't what I usually write about.

2nd Year 1st Semester COMPLETE!!

Monday, June 7, 2010

O

M

G

Hey guys! Guess what! I just completed my first semester of second year!!!!!!
woooooooooooo!!!!! ^o^

The folio submission time was 10am, and I set my alarm at 8.30am. But I woke up to Listy knocking at my door saying "hey isn't your submission at 10am?" I immediately jolted awake!! I searched for my phone, which was lying on the floor beside my bed. I must have knocked it down when I was sleeping... I checked the time: 9.45am.

So typically, I started cursing, changed my clothes, grabbed my stuff, then went to uni. I didn't shower, wash my face, etc. Disgusting I know. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

And yeah! I'm all free now! Going to clean my filthy apartment and get my life back! I don't really know what to do before I go back to indo, so I just thought about it, and I decided it's time to change the blog layout! I'm thinking something more white and clean. We'll see! And this time I will design it myself... time to stop using pre-made layouts. >.>

I saw the third year folio collection just now at uni, and wow! They're really good! I have to get to that level of amazing-ness too. Great job @ those guys!

Watching telly drinking wine~ ....wine?

Monday, April 12, 2010

Hi guys, I'm actually pretty free right now and pretty much bored so I decided hey I should blog. The above picture is of my pretty crap packaging for Japanese rice.

These days, I have been looking a lot at the sky, since I figured out the greatest method to work my sliding curtain thing. I used to just keep them shut but now they're always open except at night. So from the moment I wake, till the moment I sleep~

Sunrise:

Sunset:

Well the sunset probably isn't too amazing, but it was drizzling at that moment! The camera couldn't capture it since it was too soft. Imagine soft drizzling and the warm glow of orange hues from the setting sun. ;)

I was just sitting there with my laptop, playing a bunch of blues music. Watching the clouds drift. I never knew clouds drift as at that speed o_o I wish I had a glass of wine to celebrate the view, but you know, I can't buy it and Listy wouldn't buy it for me either =_="

The weather here in Melbourne is starting to get chilly. Auttumn is coming. I don't know how I should feel about that, since cold weather means I will start eating a whole damn lot (and yes, it has already begun).

Aside from that, life has been blissful and peaceful :) I've been feeling happy and calm.

This happened to my apartment the other day - fire! :

bits and pieces

Saturday, September 5, 2009

The question is:

how do you survive in the design industry?

To all designers and design students out there I ask that question. How the heck do you do it?? Well come over here and teach me...! o_O

Once again I am in one of those crisises. Oh how common of me already. But seriously. I feel like I'm under pressure right now because I'm just not satisfied with the design I came up with for my shampoo label. But hell, I can't push myself to fix it cause you know what, IT'S DONE. I'm not going to re-do it because it's a total pain in the ass. I seriously hated making those labels and still it turns out bad. That just cannot be good.

I just don't understand why but I can't seem to enjoy these projects. Is it greedy for me to expect every project to be enjoyable? Yes. And completely naive. Alas, knowing that, I still feel this hand pulling me down to a mental phase of utter lethargy. And though I am doing something else like browsing around facebook or watching a DVD, I just can't seem to get my mind to be completely free of stress from the projects. It's horrible.

And you strive in every project to make it something of value. To create something quirky and/or beautiful. Something creative. But damn, it's hard. Especially when you're already not enjoying what you're doing. But you can't just drop it.

I went to a website just now and read this article The Design School Survival Guide where I came across this line which said:
Look at it this way: you’re going to school to do what makes you happy, so why be miserable?

Good point.

The reason why I took design was because I enjoy it right? So why am I making myself so miserable? Don't know. I'm all emo now but I'm trying to convince myself it's okay because I'm still young and have a whole life ahead of me.

But you know what?

To hell with design.

I'm sick of all that talk and I want to get a life out of it.

So I know I haven't been blogging in a week now. I realise that I don't really blog when I'm on holiday because...well, I have plans and all that. Enjoying myself you know?

I don't think I'll blog about my 1-week holiday in this post, but I will share a very short video of me riding the Puffing Billy train! wee!

Have a good one guys

Uniprep Design Exhibition 2009

Saturday, January 17, 2009

What a great way to start this new post!

So today, design students held an exhibition showing off all our work since the start of Uniprep. Yesterday, we prepared the design studio, moving chairs, clearing cabinets, setting up things, etc.

Listy and I:

Oh and that girl also did something to me that day, which was cut my finger with a brand new cutter.
Well, actually, she was just sitting next to me and holding the cutter up. I was the one who accidentally swung my hands and my fingers sliced itself. It was a pretty deep cut too :( Seconds after that happened, Listy and I just stared at my finger, shocked. We waited until we saw blood ooze out of the cut, then we started to panick -_-
Albert got me a band aid from Lita's office, but there was no Betadine... it was missing. So in the end I just immersed my finger in a cup of drinking water that Listy got for me, and when the wound was clean, I put on the band aid.
When I reached home, I took it off, put on Betadine, and changed into a new one:

This afternoon, it fell off when I was washing my hands so again, I changed -_-:

Yes, I do like shocking colours.
So anyway! Back to the topic of the exhibition.
Lamp Designs

Mine is the one hanging on the wall. From the left, is Listy, Petrick (which we can't see in this photo), Alyssa, Martin, Livia, Albert, Kevin.
Martin's is the brightest. He used a 60watt lamp o___O. Mine was only 25... since the guy at the lamp shop told me that it would melt my lamp if it's too high.
Wearable design
Wearable is our 3rd project... I forgot to mention that Lamp is our final project.

From the left: Petrick, Livia, Kevin, Listy, Alyssa, Martin, Albert, Me
Everyone created a design based on the emotion of Love, except for me whose design represented Anger, and Petrick and Livia, Sorrow.
Imaginary Space
This was our 2nd project.

Eh yep sorry. No individual photos. Hehe well I do have them, but I'm so lazy to upload them into the blog because why? Blogger only allows 5 photo uploads at a time. Damn. What a pain! And it is also so hard to organize the photos after we've uploaded them since the text box is too small. Do something about this, Blogger!!!

Graphic Design

This was our very very first project. Well, the one at the bottom is the very first one I guess, but it's not an official graded project.

If you guys want to see the pictures clearly or see other individual shots of the projects, simply click this link, it's my facebook photo album =3
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=167175&l=e699b&id=1498661097
Oh and look what I found sticking on my balcony wall one night!

It is love... indeed...

Sleepover... without the sleeping part

Saturday, January 10, 2009

So as some of you know, I have my 4th design project, Lamp Design due soon... Next Thursday to be exact... We are supposed to design our own lamps which shows an Australian feature.
My first design was to create something based on the Aboriginal flag. So I created this, which is still incomplete by the way:
Uh that's only the rough model. I used normal paper there. Yesterday, I went to those shops by the roadside selling building materials and found a material similar to one I wanted:

So I bought it for Rp 60,000. 2 metres.
Everything was going to plan... UNTIL!!!
I made the rest of the design, and the whole thing turned out looking like crap! And thus, I decided that I would change the whole of my design. Anyway, my teacher already commented that those sort of lamps are too common already.
So I spent a whole day thinking... and googling...
Finally I was inspired by a picture of an architectural building I had since quite long ago. I decided to make that. I drew rough sketches.
And then I stopped.
I was... confused. Period. Though it looks simple at first glance, my design is actually rather tricky to make! Especially since the material I already have is quite hard. Started to panick. Then I went to make a call to Susan.
Susan helped me make my 3rd design project, which is my wearable design. We fought through black coloured straws which was peeling all over, tons and tons of double tape, UHU, and black acrylic paint. It was a pain. I couldn't have finished that project in time if it wasn't for her.
Okay back to present. I called Suze and begged her to come over to my house. So she did, and we discussed my designs so far. Then she looked at my design, and we looked at each other in silence for a while. Thinking.
Then we started making the rough model using paper. Susan did the calculations. We actually used tons of maths formula for this project... We used the pythagoras rule, the sin rule, cos rule, and one more which is s=r.(teta). Whoever knew we would actually use these for design! O_o
Finally, we completed the rough model, with calculations of all angles and lengths accurate.
The Australian feature used is the Sydney Opera House:

Actually, I wasn't even thinking of the Opera House when I drew out the design. They just happened to miraculously match.

However! At 9:00pm, Susan was told to go home! And she can never stay over at other people's homes, so we decided last minute that I would go to her house and make the project. I took a shower in the record breaking time of 5minutes.

At her house, we also did her graphic design assignment, which is to make a magazine. We managed to make 2 pages on fashion. Then we went back to the stupid lamp.

Well... I'm not going to describe everything... Just that the whole night consisted of coffee, back aches, shoulder aches, painful hips, paper, gigantic scissors, heavy cutting, x-method, more coffee, iTunes, brief explanation of the Aborigine's history since the British found Botany Bay, brainstorming, thinking, sketching, making small 3d models, thinking out possibilities, measuring, making holes with my compass, stringing pieces together with white strings, playing childish games...

Yeah most of the time we kept drifting off our initial design since it is too damn annoying to make but after lots of sketching of new designs, we still go back to the initial one -_-...

Anyway, you can go to Susan's blog to check out all the photos we took. I have none with me.

We didn't sleep at all. At 5:30AM, we watched the sun rise... unfortunately the sun was behind this stupid blue building, but seeing the sky brighten was satisfying enough since we usually wake up when it's already sunny and bright.

At around 7:00AM, I was already on my breaking limit.... My head was dizzy and my skin prickly. MY BACK AND SHOULDERS HURT LIKE HELL. I had to stretch so many times that night. Even watched this video on Youtube called something like the Top 6 Stretching Methods or the like... hohoho

But at 8:00AM, I was lying on Susan's couch and she was playing Yiruma so beautifully. After 3 songs I fell asleep. I woke up at 10:00AM with her family members bustling about. They have already seen my ugly sleeping posture I'm sure. Well whatever. I went home soon after that.

...Most importantly!

I want to thank my dear dear dear Susan. OMG THANK YOU SO DAMN MUCH. I probably wouldn't even be able to do this whole thing if it weren't for you. And I made you not sleep even though this is my project. Ah see now I feel bad. And thank you for the food and drinks. Also for the wonderful Yiruma songs. I shall go download them now. Aah I don't know how to thank you enough =w=

Well, is all from me now. I cancelled all plans for today since I don't want to fall sick. I have my final exams in 2 weeks see. If possible I'd also like to finish off the lamp by Sunday. Ah well, wish me luck!!!

Long Week Part II

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Yes so the reason I've been busy this week is because:

  1. I am dismissed at 4pm every day
  2. I need to finish the wearable design project by Thursday
  3. I need to finish the booklet on John Galliano Thursday
  4. I need to create the detailed plan for English Friday
  5. I need to make a Newspaper File for Australian Studies Friday

And well, I didn't really do #5 since by Thursday, I was too tired from the hectic days due to #2.

Anyways! I want to write down some thanks to two people! Susan, and my mother!

Susan came over to my house on Tuesday night and Wednesday night. She helped me do the project. We pasted, cut, arranged, all sorts. We sat on the floor doing all that meticulous jobs and ended up with super painful backs. You can read more on her blog.

Next, most importantly, is my Mom! Why? Because as I said, I was dismissed at 4pm every day. Hence, I barely had time to go buy the materials since I would reach home at 5pm. What my mom did was she helped me buy the pylox, suggested and bought acrylic paint, red tape, provided double tape, helped me pylox the all the straws, helped me cut straws, supported me in times of need... aah... oh and she volunteered picking Suze up and sending her home (with me in the car too of course) so if it weren't for my mom, I wouldn't even have Susan helping me in the first place. So thanks a lot mom!

I started doing the project on Saturday. Sunday I was busy so I barely did anything. Monday I could only do at night due to late dismissal. Same goes for Tuesday and Wednesay. I finished everything by Wednesday night by 2:00AM, portfolio and all. Before that, I've been sleeping for only 5 hours every single day due to the damn project. So imagine my fatigue. I woke up Wednesday morning finding tons of zits on my nose.

So there it is! Our wearable design is supposed to make use of recycled or discarded materials and it is supposed to convey one of the following emotions: Anger, Love, or Sorrow. Can you guess which emotion is conveyed in each of the designs?

Albert: Love. Listy: Love. Alyssa: Love. Kevin: Love. Me: Anger.

Haha. I just realised that everybody chose love except for me. And well, Petrick, who chose sorrow. Don't know what Livia and Martin made, they weren't there Thursday.

And here is my booklet on John Galliano:

It has to contain things like Designer background, influences, impact, world events that led to his/her designs, philosophy, characteristics, comparison with another designer, etc. We could choose our own designer, it wasn't chosen for us. Naturally, I chose my favourite fashion designer John Galliano, who now designs for Dior, but also has his own label.

In addition to our wearable model, we also have to make a concept board, with photographs of us wearing it and a concept statement explaining our design. Here is some of them:

And then Ma'am Rani told us to put up the wearables. I picked this dummy which is strong enough to hold my heavy design work.

Listy's:
(pretty isn't it?)
Petrick's:
It is a mask conveying sorrow.

Listy and my projects are extremely fragile. Especially mine. Since it is only made up of a thousand straws held together. So it is scary when somebody approaches it and starts touching the straws out of curiosity. That's why this sign is put up:

NOBODY should touch it! Not even a single poke! I worked my ass off for this so it better not be in ruins.
Oh and another thing happened today...

Yes, the E string on my new violin, Edgar, broke, as I was tuning it.
Damn.
This is already the second time I broke a string and both due to careless tuning.

Check it out. The blood forms a heart shape O___o
